VAU proudly presents “Pillow Talk: Inspiration”, the second in a series of discussion events hosted by artists invited by VAU, to engage with the public on a number of issues surrounding contemporary art. This Pillow Talk will be held in the Event Space at Drygate Brewery in Glasgow and will focus on the varied interests, expertise and inspiration of artists not necessarily a list of their favourite artists and influences – but more what interests them in general, be it music, fiction, travel, film, philosophy, politics, sport, food…anything!

We are delighted to announce our guest speakers for the event will include this year’s Venice Biennale representative for Scotland Graham Fagen, Glasgow-based film-maker Rachel MacLean, Glasgow-based printmaker Ade Adesina and recent graduate painter Catherine Ross who will each discuss and share their own interests and inspirations.

The event will take place on Tues 28th April from 6.30pm 8.30pm.

Over the past few months Visual Artist Unit have been working with three North Lanarkshire Primary Schools on indiivudal projects. These workshops facilitated the creation of three permanent artworks by the pupils, supported by the VAU team. The aim of these worshops, and VAU’s public engagement programme, was to develop the artistic skills and processes of students and provide a positive experience of contemporary art.

The first in the series will be held in the Main Gallery at Southblock and will focus on the emerging years of artists – their backgrounds, how they start out and the challenges they face in establishing their practice. We are delighted to announce our guest speakers for the first event will include David Shrigley, Toby Paterson, Peter Chalmers and The Brownlee Brothers, who will each discuss and share their own experiences when starting out. The event will take place on Tues 20th January from 6.30pm – 8.30pm and will be free for all to attend.

Visual Artist Unit (VAU) is running an Indiegogo campaign throughout September in order to raise funds for setting up artist studio spaces in Glasgow and to cover planning costs for a range of pop-up exhibitions, workshops, talks and events across Scotland.

Visual Artist Unit C.I.C is an artist led not for profit Community Interest Company supporting emerging artists based in Scotland, and making art more accessible to the wider community.

For our studio artists we will provide generously sized studio spaces at affordable prices, with support to not only develop their practice through self-direction and group crits but also to gain professional development experience by participating in our public engagement programme.

For this we will invite emerging artists from across the country to exhibit with us and to engage with the wider community by delivering talks and facilitating classes, workshops and skill share sessions, to help make art more accessible.

Currently we are looking for expressions of interest from artists keen on renting a studio space with us once we’ve secured and set up our premises. We aim to set up between 10-15 spaces initially.
