Working on top of older drawings and using my brick collection as a drawing source has allowed me to build up a surface quality that I can react with and against. I enjoy this manipulation of sanding back and adding material, allowing the piece to find its own. This reinvention method has led me from working with pencil to using oil painting. This has renewed my excitement in my practice recently.
At the moment, I am researching the work of Giorgio Morandi. I have recently spent time in Italy and made going to the Morandi Museum a top priority. Using bricks instead of Morandi's bottles and vases has allowed me to focus on simple compositional structures in a similar way to how he explored his subjects through drawing and painting.
